Bitte um Anmeldung unter: mailto:sarah.lauss@uni-ak.ac.at.2023 March 17 / 13:30Monumental Cares (Manchester University Press, 2023) diskutiert die Denkmaldebatten des letzten Jahrzehnts gemeinsam mit Themen, die uns als monumental oder überwältigend erscheinen, wie Klimakrise, Migration und globale politische Spannungen. Das Buch bespricht künstlerische und aktivistische Interventionen, die zeigen, dass eine ortsbezogene Beschäftigung mit Geschichte wichtig ist für eine funktionierende, demokratische Öffentlichkeit, und zeigt, wie neue Formen traditionelle Monumentalobjekte ersetzen können.
Monumental Cares (Manchester University Press, 2023) considers the monument debates of the past decade together in light of phenomena that strike us as monumental or overwhelming, such as climate crisis, migration, and local and global political tensions. How can a date or event be made to stand for, much less represent, such processes? We have to start from the ground up, Widrich argues, paying attention to how sites, as well as artifacts and the audiences that inhabit them operate on multiple, overlapping levels of mediation. A multidirectional theory of site brings together objects, their photographic reproduction, and a geographically informed sense of audience(s) – local, regional, global. Attending to history and practice in this site-directed way, helps us see the significance of history to the fashioning of a working, democratic public sphere.

1030 Vienna2022 May 13 / 18:00If monuments are public expressions of what societies care to remember, they also have to be understood as evidence to what societies choose to forget. Deadly colonial imperialism and patriarchal power glorified in stone or metal are the memory infrastructure of our cities. Can public space be freed from the violence of monuments? Can a democratic public space become the site for representing monumental worries? We argue for an activist ethics of im/permanent material articulations, spatial and visual solidarity, shared concerns, and planetary care.

Wie können räumliche Konzeptionen im Zeitalter des Anthropozäns und inmitten von Ausdehnungen in den virtuellen Bereich oder in den noch nicht wirtschaftlich ausgenutzten außerorbitalen Weltraum künstlerisch gefasst werden?
How can geographical concepts that incorporate the impact of humans be understood aesthetically and politically? How do artists deal with territories and demarcation attempts by states and political entities? How do they discover territories or activate them in their imaginations, be they rural, urban, or virtual (or even extraterrestrial or microscopic)?

Propulsion: On Changing Futures
2016 October 22 / 17:00 – 2016 October 22Nach dem ersten Runden Tisch “Humans Make Nature”, bei dem Landschaft im Anthropozän thematisiert wurde, widmet sich der Runde Tisch 2016 an der Abteilung für Ortsbezogene Kunst vergangenen wie möglichen neuen Zukunftsentwürfen.
Ein zentraler Bezugspunkt der transdisziplinären Vorträge und Diskussionen ist dabei der Weltraum – ein wesentlicher Zukunfts-Raum des 20. Jahrhunderts, der derzeit durch unterschiedlichste Entwicklungen erneut ins Blickfeld gerät.After last year’s first Round Table “Humans Make Nature” about ideas of landscape in the Anthropocene, the department’s Round Table 2016 adresses past and possible new futures.
The transdisciplinary lectures’ and discussions’ pivotal point of reference will be outer space: a key driver of the 20th century’s perspectives on future that today has gained new momentum through various developments.

Während des Wettlaufs ins All in den 1950er und 60er Jahren kam es zu einer Weiterentwicklung des Weltraumrechts, in der der Einfluss von Science Fiction Literatur besonders spürbar war. Weltraumrecht war bereits auf elementarer Ebene eine Science Fiction, indem es eine Gesetzgebung für Handlungsbereiche noch vor deren technischer Umsetzbarkeit schuf.The “Invasion” of Chaos Theory and Science Fiction in Space Law
The influence of science-fiction literature can be detected in the advancements of space law during the first space race of the 1950s and ’60s. Space law was inherently science fictional in that it legislated practices in advance of their technical feasibility.

Was die Kompositbilder im Film Powers of Ten von Charles und Ray Eames mit aktuellen Abbildungen des Weltalls verbindet: Beide zeigen Raum ohne Zeit. Während Powers of Ten unter fotografischen Bedingungen entstand, ist in heutigen Bildern des Universums die Pixelung bedingt durch Sensoren und Computerleistung zu sehen.Picturing the Universe: On Scale, Calculation, and Composites
The universe has always been mediated; it has always been an image, a virtual universe. The composite images of Charles and Ray Eames’s film Powers of Ten (1977), like current images of the universe, depict space without time. While Powers of Ten is informed by photography, today’s images of the universe require the pixels of digital sensors and high computer performance.
