English version
This course is held in collaboration with the 2027 Carinthian Cultural Focus Year, curated by Marlene Hausegger and Hannes Zebedin. During the course, participants will develop works related to stone, which they will produce themselves during a multi-day stone workshop in Krastal, Carinthia, in the summer semester. The works will subsequently be presented in a joint exhibition on the grounds of Gurk Cathedral.
Stone will be explored both thematically and formally in relation to sacred architecture, mysticism and nature, as well as in representations of transcendence and cosmological orders. In the context of the 2027 Carinthian Cultural Focus Year, we will examine forms of locality, regionality and identity-forming formats, as well as the role of connections beyond the local community in sustaining a functioning village community.
The course begins with a compulsory excursion to Gurk, including a visit to the cathedral and the exhibition spaces. In the subsequent sessions, we will discuss individual approaches and the development of forms for each student’s artistic work, drawing on examples from both historical and contemporary art.
Stone will not be considered solely as a material of classical sculpture, but in the diversity of its medial representations, including its combination with other materials and its translation into image, sound, performance and installation.
The course is limited to a maximum of five students from Site-Specific Art and five students from Sculpture and Space.
Admission is based on a letter of motivation.
