Wir – ein temporäres Kollektiv von Studierenden und Künstler*innen der Abteilung Ortsbezogene Kunst – machen einen Spaziergang durch das Nordwestbahnhof Areal. Heute eine Industriebrache, Erinnerungsort und Grenzzone, bald ein neues Wohnviertel.
Eine Prozession: wir trauern um das, was vergessen wurde und Spuren hinterlassen hat. Wir feiern, was im Schatten des Verlassenen gewachsen ist. Wir lesen Gefundenes auf, stellen fragile Aufmerksamkeiten her und reaktivieren verborgene Blickwinkel. Unweigerlich wandeln wir dabei auf dem Grat zwischen echtem Engagement und Ruinenfetisch.

Eine Kooperation zwischen brut und der Abteilung Ortsbezogene Kunst, Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien.
Die Prozession und vorangegangene Ausstellung wurden im Rahmen der Lehrveranstaltung Exhibitions: Thinking with them and making them von Anne Faucheret an der Abteilung Ortsbezogene Kunst entwickelt.

A Performative Procession

We – a temporary collective of students and artists from the department of Site-Specific Art – go for a walk in the former Northwest Railway Station. Today an industrial wasteland, a site of remembrance and an urban border zone, it will soon be a new urban district.
A procession: mourning what is gone, what left traces or a ghostly presence. Celebrating what grew in the shadows of abandonment. We carry found objects, craft fragile forms of attention, reactivate unseen sights, excavate hidden tracks. And, inevitably, we linger on the ridge between genuine symbolic investment and ruin porn.

Bien cargadita había venido, trayendo dioses demonios, que ahora también habitan este subsuelo

“Pachakamaq, Katari or Amaru, Supayas, Wari, Jap‘iñuñus, Achakallas, Wa Kon, Wallallo Qarwinchu” are some names from Andean demon-gods associated with the underground, darkness and wild natural forces. I met some of them, also by name, at Chuquiago Marka (La Paz) and Uru uru (Oruro). Often appearing in their present syncretic forms, dancing at the carnival, on their way to honor the “Virgen del Socavón” (Virgin of the tunnel). At other times, their traces are evident, as landslides and earthquakes are known to be caused by their underground moves. Miners certainly venerate “El Tío” (Supay) in return for his protection against catastrophe, and in gratitude for allowing prosperity.
In the basement of Angwandte’s Ceramic Studio, with Vienna’s underground matter, I want to render their manifestations and summon them to guide me through Manqhapacha (Underworld).
