In der Lehrveranstaltung untersuchen wir, wie soziale und strukturelle Bedingungen Orte und Landschaften prägen. Unser konkreter Fokus liegt auf Schwarzau am Steinfeld, wo sich im ehemaligen Schloss Schwarzau die einzige Frauenjustizanstalt Österreichs befindet. Durch Exkursionen nähern wir uns sowohl dem Ort als auch der Institution. Ziel der Lehrveranstaltung ist es, ein sensibles Verständnis für Schwarzau zu entwickeln und Fragen danach zu stellen, wie den Insassinnen – einer marginalisierten Gruppe – Ausdrucks- und Sichtbarkeitsräume eröffnet werden können.

Reflexions on history and use of places and landscape
In this course, we explore how social and structural conditions shape places and landscapes. Our specific focus is on Schwarzau am Steinfeld, where the former Schwarzau Palace now houses Austria’s only women’s prison. Through excursions, we will examine both the town and the institution. The aim of the course is to develop a sensitive understanding of Schwarzau and to consider how the inmates — a marginalized group — can be provided with forms of expression and visibility.
