J1407b | Raphaël Languillat

J1407b is a continuously evolving live set for modular synthesizers. It is inspired by the celestial body of the same name in the constellation Centaurus, which is surrounded by a massive ring system consisting of more than 30 rings—each with a diameter of several tens of millions of kilometers. Overwhelming drones, granular soundscapes, and recordings from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft gradually transform, dissolve, and reemerge in ever-changing states. J1407b opens up an immersive, intense soundscape that reflects the ongoing processes of accumulation within this cosmic system: monumental rings of rock, dust, and emptiness that coexist, overlap, and interpenetrate one another. With each performance, this live set continues to evolve as new musical material is recorded, transformed, and woven into the existing structure.
