Lange Momente, scheinbar beiläufig Entdecktes und Situationen zwischen Fakten und Fiktionen zu Alltag, geopolitischem Geschehen und Kunst sind oftmals Ausgangspunkt der künstlerischen wie kuratorischen Arbeiten von Klaus Schafler. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte ergeben sich dabei durch seine interdisziplinäre Auseinandersetzung und Kollaborationen zu Phänomenen des Wandels und der Flüchtigkeit unserer zusehends fragilen Welt, im Speziellen auch der Kunstwelt.
Gleichzeitig arbeitet er in wechselnden Rollen, zwischen eigener künstlerischer Praxis, in temporären Kollektiven, und seit September 2022 auch als der Leiter einer Kunstinstitution für viele, der Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Wien. Diese versteht sich als neugieriger wie offener Ausstellungsort für verschiedenste künstlerischen Formen, Biografien und Communities im erweiterten kulturellen Umfeld. Seit einiger Zeit betreibt die Kunsthalle Exnergasse auch themenspezifische Artist-Residencies an ihrer neuen Dependance am Zukunftshof, dem Zentrum für urbane Landwirtschaft und sozial-ökologisch orientierte Stadtteilentwicklung am südlichen Stadtrand von Wien.
Klaus Schafler, geboren in Graz, lebt in Wien. Er studierte Kunst an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Universität Graz und Scienze Politiche an der Universita’ degli Studi di Messina. Er war fellow artist in residence am LMCC (* Lower Manhatten Cultural Council), New York und Gastkritiker bei ART OMI, NY.
2015 war er Mitinitiator der kollaborativen Projektplattform Grammar of Urgencies, die derzeit am Projekt Fleeting Territories arbeitet und sich mit Zeitlichkeiten wie Verräumlichungsprozessen in Zeiten des “großen Übergangs” beschäftigt.
Seine ortsspezifischen Installationen, performativen Aktionen und inszenierten Vorträge wurden u.a. im Kunsthaus Graz / nGbK, Berlin / JAUS Gallery, Los Angeles / K.U.L.M. / Johnson Design Center, The New School, New York / Maldives Pavilion – 55.Venice Biennale / Regionale12, Murau / Chinese Biennale, Beijing / Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana / <rotor>, Graz gezeigt.

Long moments, seemingly incidental discoveries and situations between facts and fictions about everyday life, geopolitical events and art are often the starting point of Klaus Schafler’s artistic as well as curatorial projects. His interdisciplinary exploration and collaborations on phenomena of change and the fleetingness of our increasingly fragile world, and in particular of the art world, give rise to thematic focal points.
In simultaneity he works in changing roles, between his own artistic practice, in temporary collectives, and since September 2022 also as the director of an art institution for many, Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna. The Kunsthalle Exnergasse sees itself as a curious and open exhibition space for a wide variety of artistic forms, biographies and communities in an expanded cultural environment. For some time now, it also has been running theme-specific artist residencies at its new dependence at Zukunftshof, the center for urban agriculture and socio-ecologically oriented district development on the southern outskirts of Vienna.
Klaus Schafler was born In Graz and lives in Vienna. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, economics at the University of Graz and scienze politiche at the Universita’ degli Studi di Messina.
